On the western side of the island, on the rocks and at 250 meters altitude, is the capital of Santorini, Fira. The name has been established by the islanders, and is also known as Santorini or Thira, as well as the whole island. Fira is the tourist, commercial and cultural center of the island, as it receives most visitors every year. The streets are full of life during the summer months, and there are many choices of attractions, activities and nightlife.
The history of Fira is quite limited contrary to the rest of the traditional settlements of the island. The settlement began to develop after half of the 18th century, when the inhabitants began to leave Skaros Castle due to the devastating earthquake. By a common decision of the authorities of Santorini, Fira was chosen as the new capital of the island, which is still the case today.
